SUMMARY:Kona Coffee Cultural Festival: Sip and Savour Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:What’s brewing at the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival in Hawaii this Nov. 01 – 10? Top 3 Reasons why Kona Coffee is deliciously rich and expensive.\nKona Coffee Cultural Festival is celebrating its 53nd anniversary this year. The oldest food festival in Hawaii salutes and promotes the destination’s unique culture\, diversity\, and coffee heritage. \n\nThe festival offer tastings\, and hands-on cultural events that tell the story of Kona’s vibrant coffee heritage. (Kona Coffee Cultural Festival)\n\nThe 10-day festival includes many events\, showcasing the coffee industry and its communities through interpretive stories\, food experiences\, visual and performing arts.  Check the latest schedule of events. \nWhy Kona Coffee is Rich and Tasty?\nKona’s almost 200-year coffee industry is pioneered by the Japanese and the native Hawaiian community.  Coffea arabica (indigenous to the Ethiopian highlands) was first cultivated in Kona in 1828 by Samuel Reverend Ruggles\, from Brazilian cuttings. \n\n\nKona Coffee – One of the World’s Priciest Coffee \n\n\nThe coffee’s delicious richness\, slightly acidic flavour and piquant aroma lies in the terroir\, climate\, picking and processing methods. \n\nKona coffee flowers appear in February and March. Beans resembling cherries are ready to pick in late August. (Kona Coffee Cultural Festival)\n\nKona coffee thrives in the volcanic soil on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanoes.  Here the micro-climate goes from hot tropical mornings to misty afternoons and cool evenings. \nAveraging at USD40 per pound\, Kona coffee is one of the most expensive coffees in the world.  Why is the premium price? High labour cost\, excellent quality and limited supply. \nThe popular coffee festival is the best venue in Hawaii to savour authentic freshly brewed Kona java\, meet the producers\, and savour a taste of Hawaii. \nKona on Hawaii’s Big Island is one breathtaking place in the world to enjoy a cup of java lava under swaying palm trees\, and relax to the tune of crashing waves. \nRelated: Blues Getaways: Top Favourite Fun Places in the US \nSo hula your way to Kona this November 01 to 10. \nFirst Published:  October 08\, 2016  |  Updated: October 04\, 2024

SUMMARY:Discover Malaysia Through Batik Art: Expressions of Identities
DESCRIPTION:Batik Making at Noor Arfa Batik\, Trengganu (Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board) \n\nDiscover the beauty of Malaysia through Batik Art this October 30 through December 9th at the Chinese Cultural Centre in Vancouver. \n\nThe exhibition tells the story of the emergence of batik textiles in Malaysia\, how the traditional and design forms have evolved from the 1960s to the present day. Batik is woven into the cultural identity of the Malaysian people. \nWhat is Batik?\nA resist dyeing process in which hot molten wax or rice paste is applied to the surface of fabric as a resist to dyes to form undyed areas of pattern. \nThis resist is removed by boiling\, melting or scraping after dyeing thus creating intricate patterns and designs. Amongst the popular batik are batik canting (hand drawn)\, batik cap (wax-stamping) and batik sutera saring (silk screen). \n\nBatik – A quintessential piece of the Malaysian cultural identity. (Canadian Society for Asian Arts)\n\nMalaysia’s batik production has developed from the traditional method of using the block technique to that of using machines\, known as the Integrated Computer Aided Tint System (I.C.A.T.S)\, alongside the introduction of chemical colouring. Modern technology has enabled more efficient batik production of lasting quality\, and has turned batik into one of Malaysia’s more viable commercialized products. \nHistory of Batik in Malaysia\nThe development of batik in this country originated from the period of the Srivijaya kingdom in the 15th century. During the reign of Sultan Zainal Abidin II\, the third Sultan of Terengganu\, a royal weaver named Minah Pelangi had produced the kain pelangi sometimes referred to as batik pelangi\, using the tie-dye method which is a non-wax-resist process influenced to some degree by the Indian trade textile\, the bandhana. \nThis is followed by the patterned textile\, such as the Kedah Batik and Kotak Batik\, brought into the country by Indian traders. Both were the same cloth and shared the same technique of production\, that of using a wooden block as the printing tool. This wooden block is known as sarang bunga (floral nest) or sarang kayu berukir (engraved wooden nest). \nToday\, batik is generally regarded as a symbol of national identity. Producers are conscious of the fact that Malaysians are better informed about batik\, appreciate good design\, quality\, colour combinations and the craftsmanship that distinguishes it\, as a truly handcrafted Made-In-Malaysia product. Batik Malaysia has evolved being a traditional folk art form to a contemporary batik textile and visual art. \nAdmission is by Donation. \nLink\nTravel Malaysia\nBatik Tour
