Global EAT - Is Thai Riceberry: the New Super Grain?
The purple-black pigments in riceberry is found to contain several folds more antioxidant activities than red grape, prune and blueberry.

Is Thai riceberry the next choice superfood to hit North American grocery shelves? It’s non-GMO and gluten free.

The purple-black coloured Thai riceberry bran is loaded with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, such as omega-3 fatty acids – vital health-promoting compounds that can help to lower the risks of diabetes, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and cancer.

The delicious riceberry grain is rich in antioxidants such as beta-carotene, gama oryzanol, vitamin E, zinc and folic acid. The high fibre and bran oil content in this functional food aids in digestion, and slow down the effects of aging.

What is Riceberry?

Thailand is the often called, “The Rice Bowl of Asia”. Rice is the root of Thai life, a national staple, and the country’s number one agricultural export. More than 3,500 varieties of rice exist in Thailand. The most notable variety is the Thai Hom Mali or Jasmine rice.

To boost the nutritional values, fragrance and taste of rice, researchers from Thailand’s Kasetsart University, Rice Science Center developed riceberry, a cross between two renowned Thai rice strains.

Rice berry is a cross-pollination between Jai Hom Nin (non-glutinous black rice) and the fragrant Khao Dawk Mali 105 (Thai Hom Mali or Jasmine rice). The breed is a wholesome, soft-textured, tasty and aromatic grain – high in minerals, anthocyanin and lipid soluble antioxidants.

The long grain black, unmilled rice has become the most popular whole grain rice among the health-conscious in Thailand, according to the Thai Trade Centre, Vancouver.
